Human Trafficking Sign

There are several signs that may indicate that someone is a victim of human trafficking. These can include:

  • Lack of control over their own identification documents, such as a passport or ID card
  • Signs of physical or sexual abuse, such as bruises or scars
  • Lack of control over their own money, or being unable to account for large amounts of cash
  • Being forced to work long hours without breaks or time off
  • Being isolated from friends and family, or being unable to move freely
  • Being in a situation where they are unable to leave or leave on their own accord
  • Fear of law enforcement or other authorities

If you notice any of these signs in someone you know, it is important to reach out to them and offer support. You can also contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888.373.7888 for more information and assistance.

Human trafficking, often categorized by sex and labor trafficking, is widespread in the United States. Victims of human trafficking can come from any background, however according to the U.S. Department of Justice, 94% of sex trafficking victims are female, 40% are Black, and 24% are Latinx. And in South Dakota, where Native American women are only 8% of the population, they represent 40% of sex trafficking victims. These statistics are staggering.
