“UNITAS Parents & Caretakers Guide”

Lights, a 9 video “Parents & Caretakers Guide” series from UNITAS‘s YouTube Channel

From UNITAS: Our Parent and Caretaker guide offers critical information for parents, caretakers and teachers that will enable them to understand the issue of human trafficking, how it impacts the children in their lives, and how to talk to their children about such a heavy and important topic. We are using our digital comics, based on the lived-experiences of teens, to enable parents to join us in reaching kids before traffickers do. Each video breaks down a specific form of trafficking, how traffickers lure their young victims and what they and their parents/caretakers/teachers can do to stop trafficking and exploitation before it happens.

With more than 70% of schools closed and youth at home online during the pandemic, this guide is more critical now than ever before.

Human trafficking. Just those words make any parent or caretaker cringe with fear or concern. Yet, to keep our children safe, we have to talk about it. Join Andrea Powell, Director of Survivor and Youth Engagement as she speaks with Liz Radzicki of Participate to break down human trafficking in episode 1 of LIGHTS: Talking to Kids about Human Trafficking. Vulnerability and exploitation. Whose vulnerable? Who wants to exploit that. and why? Children are, by the very nature of their age, vulnerable toward human trafficking. This does not discount their resiliency or strength as young people, however. They deserve to know the facts about human trafficking and to feel supported in learning more about staying safe. When you speak to your children about human trafficking, you are giving the power of knowledge. They will learn, together with you, that they can speak to you about the important and harder things in life. So, tune in!
