Jennifer Bullard, PMP, Program Manager at Cubic explains, “My Human Trafficking Essentials certificate has been approved by the Project Management Institute!” She continues, “My company does international business, and we have to be compliant with the Modern Slavery Act. I needed to understand the basics of human trafficking in order to execute our contracts properly.”

When submitting a course, the Project Management Institute (PMI) does a review to see if it's legitimate. The standard is a professional or subject matter expert is teaching material that is relevant to the project/program management profession. My salient points for the argument were:

    • Nothing in the PMI Course Catalog covered human trafficking.
    • I work for an international business, so I need to understand the basics of human trafficking in order to be compliant with the Modern Slavery Act of 2015.
    • The materials were presented by a college professor who is well versed in the topic.
    • This is a comparable format to other courses I have taken on LinkedIn Learning.

I think other PMPs (project management professionals) will take the course and be able to mention any of the above and have the course cleared as part of their PDUs. Because it took me 1.5 hours to complete the course, I asked for 1.5 PDUs in the Technical category. This last part is pretty important because that is what the PMP will submit as part of their claim.
