Experts: Child sex trafficking is a reality in South Carolina and prevention is key

The South Carolina Human Trafficking Task Force sees cases of in “every corner of the state,” says Director Katheryn Moorehead.

“We have seen a steady increase in the number of cases since legislation was passed in 2018 positioning the Department of Social Services to respond to the needs of these children, and as the South Carolina Division built their Human Trafficking Unit, ” says Moorehead.

She says she feels that an increased is having an effect on the reporting of the crimes, and increased awareness will also lead to better prevention.

Moorehead believes the movie “The Sound of Freedom,” now in theatres, is also helping bring a new awareness to the reality of human trafficking, and that's why she is encouraged by the film.

“I think, as more awareness is brought to the crime, that positions people in the community to be able to identify it and report it,” says Moorehead.

“I have to emphasize that there are many variations of trafficking, whether it is of children, or of children, or trafficking of adults. Unfortunately, we see that throughout South Carolina,” she continues, “there are a number of ways that citizens can with the South Carolina Human Trafficking Task Force to help educate and prevent these crimes.”

Moorehead also asks everyone to put the National Human Trafficking Task Force phone number in their “contacts” so that if you suspect you witness human trafficking, you can report it immediately, and law enforcement can follow up.

That number is 888- 373-7888.
