Cambodia and US discuss human trafficking situation – Khmer Times

Minister of Interior Sar Kheng on Friday discussed several issues, especially the human trafficking situation, with US Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy.

In the meeting Kheng thanked the United States for its willingness to cooperate in the fight against human trafficking in Cambodia.

He said that nowadays, the forms of human trafficking have evolved due to the use of communication technology as well as information technology in committing crimes.

Kheng added that Cambodia is implementing campaigns against human trafficking and the government has carried out a number of important tasks, including the fight against illegal gambling, both and offline, foreign labour inspections and combating money laundering.

He said that the Cambodian authorities have been working to rescue victims and punish the perpetrators and those involved with human trafficking.

He added that the fight against human trafficking cannot be implemented by any country alone, but requires cooperation at both the regional and global levels, especially between forces tasked with cracking down on the crimes..

Ambassador Murphy touched on the campaigns being undertaken as well as the results of the fight against human trafficking that Cambodia has implemented in the past.

He noted that a number of crimes have occurred, especially those related to technological fraud, which has led the people of some countries to be deceived by criminals who bring them across the border into Cambodia illegally.

The Ambassador agreed with Kheng that human trafficking is a global issue and that global efforts are needed to address it.

Kheng and Ambassador Murphy also discussed a number of other issues, including the repatriation of Cambodian citizens with the latest deportation from the United States. Both sides agreed to continue to promote cooperation on this issue.
