Parliament

A parliament is a legislative body that is responsible for making laws and governing a country or region. Parliaments are typically composed of elected representatives, who are chosen by the people through a democratic process. The powers and responsibilities of parliaments vary depending on the specific political system of a country.

In some countries, parliaments are bicameral, meaning that they are made up of two chambers or houses. The lower house, also known as the House of Representatives or the House of Commons, is usually responsible for initiating legislation and representing the people. The upper house, also known as the Senate or the House of Lords, is typically responsible for reviewing and approving legislation.

In other countries, parliaments are unicameral, meaning that they are made up of a single chamber. These parliaments may have similar powers and responsibilities to bicameral parliaments.

Parliaments play a central role in the political system of many countries, and they are a key institution of democratic governance.

Needle spiking haunts the land

I have recently read dozens of news reports on the peril of ‘spiking’ whereby young women are rendered near-unconscious by perpetrators who spike their drinks with drugs or – more recently – literally inject the women via hypodermic needle with an incapacitating substance.   Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s record of 38 years in power is currently exceeded by only three African despots. The presidents of Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and Uganda, Théodoros Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Paul Biya, and Yoweri Museveni, have all held power for longer than Hun Sen. Like him, they are political fossils who have done…

A dangerous new law to criminalize sex work is currently being debated in the Spanish parliament. Anti-trafficking, human rights groups to reject amended sex trade bill – The Mail & Guardian

A sex worker gestures flirtatiously to passing men as she stands outside a dilapidated multi-storey building on Nugget Street in Johannesburg’s Hillbrow area. “It’s not like a hotel, [there are] no bookings. The Transport Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Bill, currently passing through the UK Parliament, seeks to establish minimum service levels for transport provision following widespread industrial action on the country’s railways. The UK government describes the Bill as necessary ‘to keep Britain moving during transport strikes’. While the legislation’s effectiveness has been questioned elsewhere, the Bill…
