Gender

Gender refers to the social and cultural roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a society associates with men and women. Gender is often used as a synonym for sex, but the two terms are not interchangeable. While sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women, gender is a social and cultural construct that varies across societies and over time. In many societies, gender is defined and enforced through a set of norms and expectations that dictate how men and women should behave, dress, and interact with others. However, there is increasing recognition that gender is not binary (male or female) and that individuals may identify as male, female, or non-binary.
