Gender refers to the social and cultural roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a society associates with men and women. Gender is often used as a synonym for sex, but the two terms are not interchangeable. While sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women, gender is a social and cultural construct that varies across societies and over time.
