Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has launched a new program in Florida to help human trafficking and domestic violence survivors feel more secure at home.

The program is called Project Protect. It provides doorbell cameras, free of charge, to survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, stalking and sexual violence.

The county clerks of court offices are often where victims go to seek protective injunctions against abusers. The trained staff at those offices in Hillsborough and Martin counties will now provide information about how to receive the doorbell cameras.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder is honored to be part of the pilot program.

“First of all, you will have enhanced physical safety. You'll be able to view if someone is at your door, is it a neighbor, is it someone delivering groceries, or is it the offender,” Snyder said. “I think what's very important is it provides a sense of psychological safety and well-being.”

Moody made the announcement Thursday with county clerks of court and local by her side.

The program is being implemented just days after deputies in Martin County made a human trafficking arrest.

“Thankfully, I would say I don't think it's (human trafficking) very prevalent. We work hard to make sure it's not,” Snyder said. “But the very crux of this program will be domestic violence which those crimes tend to be ongoing.”

According to the Florida Department of Children and Families, more than 100,000 domestic violence cases were reported in 2020. Countless cases go unreported. Nearly one-third of women murdered each year in the United States are killed due to domestic violence.

The sheriff said the program will improve the safety of crime victims.

“If you're a victim of domestic violence, if you're a victim of human trafficking, and you make that report to us, we will help you get additional safety by way of these ring cameras, which will be no expense for the victim,” Snyder said.

The program will be available in two pilot counties to start. There are plans to expand the program statewide.
