A sea of candles glowed as several hundred community members attended a vigil for the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking, Tuesday evening  at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Oakland.

The Diocese of Oakland held the vigil to focus attention on the increased crime in the San Antonio neighborhood resulting from the trafficking of young women and men drawn into prostitution.

Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, led the vigil, along with Bishop Bob Jackson of Acts Full Gospel Church. Speakers included District 5 city councilmember Noel Gallo and former Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley. The St. Anthony Church Choir performed, and the crowd sang along to “Amazing Grace” as candles were lighted.

St. Anthony School is the oldest school in the Diocese of Oakland and is a member of the Lumen Christi Academies, led by Executive Director Rodney Pierre-Antoine.

“St. Anthony Church and School communities have been part of and have stood in solidarity with our East Oakland neighbors for over 150 years. Thursday's vigil united an ecumenical group of neighbors, community organizations, Oakland police and elected officials in prayer for victims of human trafficking and for increased safety and security in our community,” Pierre-Antoine said.
