Charleston business 2nd in SC to be fined this month for child labor violations

The U.S. Department of Labor is cracking down on South Carolina businesses that employ minors, assessing penalties for violations of child labor laws.

A Charleston-area trampoline park and other businesses were fined for child labor law violations. File Summit Adventure Park Charleston will pay $11,010 for allowing 30 teenagers between 14 and 15 years old to remain on the clock for more than 18 hours in a school week and past 7 p.m. on school nights, according to a Jan. 5 statement.

An unidentified employer told The Post and Courier that the Ashley River Road business owned by SC1 Summit LLC was “not interested” in commenting on Jan. 9.

Summit Adventure isn't the only South Carolina employer fined this month for child labor law violations.

An operator of nine fast-food restaurants in the Midlands and Upstate was penalized more than $47,000 for allowing 65 minor-aged employees to work outside of federally approved work hours, according to a Jan. 3 notice. The violations were at locations in Columbia, Greenville, Irmo, Laurens, Newberry, Orangeburg, Piedmont, Seneca and Walhalla.

Jamie Benefiel, the Labor department's Columbia division director, said employers can avoid violations and financial penalties by reading up on the regulations at Youthrules.gov and contacting the agency's Wage and Hour Division if they have questions.

“Employers must familiarize themselves with the requirements that come with hiring minor employees, Benefiel said.

DOL said it's been cracking down on child labor violations in the Southeast region. It assessed fines of more than $1 million for more than 190 violations by food-service employers in 2020 and 2021.

Previous South Carolina cases have included a Bojangles franchise in Aiken County and a Marco's Pizza operator in the Charleston area.
