Human trafficking, aggravated assault reported at campus residence hall

UCPD is currently investigating a case of human trafficking and aggravated assault that occurred at a UC Berkeley student residence hall earlier this month, according to the UCPD crime log.

The incident occurred on Dec. 3 at approximately midnight and was reported on Dec. 7 by a secondhand source. The crime involved human trafficking to obtain forced labor or service, the log stated.

UCPD Administrative Sgt. Jacob Westlie noted that additional information will not be released until the survivor is ready to come forward.

“If we learn of anything from this that shows there's any kind of danger posed to the Cal community, we will absolutely share that,” Westlie said. “The next step will be for the detectives to speak with the survivor.”

UCPD did not send a campus WarnMe alert for the report.

Westlie said a variety of factors contributed to the decision not to notify the campus community using this service.

“It appeared to be an isolated incident, and we do an assessment,” Westlie said. “We look at time of occurrence, location, etc. — this did not meet the criteria for an ongoing or current threat.”
