Child Marriage: Jharkhand tops the list of child marriages, in Bengal 55% of girls are married before attaining the age of 21 years

New Delhi: Marriage before a certain age is a crime in the eyes of the law. For this, the minimum age of marriage for boys and girls has been fixed. But in different parts of the country girls are married before a certain age. In many cases, girls are married as minors. What is the rate of child marriage in any state, the Union Home Ministry has said in a recent report. The survey was conducted by the office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Ministry. It has been observed that Jharkhand is at the top in terms of pre-pubescent marriage of girls. Child marriage is not a problem in Kerala.

According to this report, 1.9% of girls in the country get married before reaching the age of 18. In Jharkhand, this figure is 5.8 percent. This is almost three times higher than the national average. In Kerala this number is zero. In rural areas of Jharkhand, about 7.3 percent of girls are married off at the age of 18. In urban areas it is three percent.

It is reported that this survey was conducted in 2020. This report was published this year. The issue of girls getting married before the age of 21 with 18 was also the subject of the survey. West Bengal is the first. According to the report, 54.9% of West Bengal girls get married before the age of 21. In Jharkhand, this number is 54.6 percent. The national average for girls marrying before the age of 21 is 29.5 percent.

Recently, many incidents of violence against women have come to light in Jharkhand. It is alleged that the young woman was burnt by throwing petrol from the window. In Dumka, a 14-year-old girl was accused of rape by promising her marriage. After the rape, the minor was hanged from a tree. The National Commission for Women is investigating both the incidents.
