Local filmmakers are hoping to bring attention to the harsh realities of human trafficking and its local ties to Kansas City.

The film “The Unexpected” premiered at The Bird Theater Sunday night. The film crew is hoping the message from the film will reach a global audience.

The whole film was shot in the Kansas City Area — depicting KCI as an airport in Venezuela and transforming a farm in Louisburg to look like Peru.

Kansas City local Khalid Abdulkaadir helped to write and direct the film through his production company, AGA Productions.

“We can produce things that are substantial enough that can reach a global audience to have that real global impact,” Abdulkaadir said.

The film depicts the harsh realities of human trafficking and the unexpected connections it might have in your community.

“It is something real and it's happening right here in our front and back yard,” he said.

They are hoping it will bring attention to what is both an international and local issue. The film has a big focus on organ trafficking.

“The biggest thing is . We want people to be aware that human trafficking is real. It is here and it's a serious issue,” Abdulkaadir said.

Taking on issues like this isn't new for Abdulkaadir and his production company.

“From a social impact standpoint, this isn't new to us at all,” he said. “We have an approach methodology of bringing the community together using film as like an apparatus or a way to get different people to work together.”

This film is one of their bigger projects – one they hope can be a catalyst for change.

Remi Adeleke is the writer and director of the film. Abdulkaadir said production company, G-Base, has watched the film and plans to take the concept and make it into a feature.

The film will be available to the public on September 30. Abdulkaadir said Adeleke will post it to his YouTube page.
