With the support of the Pope, they promote the training of transport workers to fight against slavery through campaigns that make complaint channels visible

Pope Francis expressed his support for the efforts to increase prevention, detection and fight campaigns against human trafficking and smuggling, within the framework of the second international meeting of Transport Unions in the Vatican, in which Gustavo Vera, director of the Executive Committee for the Fight against Trafficking and Exploitation of Persons, which depends on the Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nation.

After the activity chaired by Monsignor Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, which took place last Tuesday at the Casina Pio IV, headquarters of the Academy of Sciences, the final document raised the need to train transport workers to detect signs of human trafficking and smuggling people and report them on time. In addition, he highlighted the importance of redoubling the fight against this crime and the new forms of slavery, through campaigns that make complaint channels visible.

The day after the meeting, Pope Francis personally greeted each of the delegates who participated in the meeting, among whom were the members of the Argentine delegation.

Argentina was recently rated by the US Department of State in the highest category for efforts to combat trafficking. That document placed the country among the three nations that work the most for the elimination of this crime in Latin America.

 

In the 2020-2022 period, 175 investigations were opened in Argentina for and 58 for . As a result, 31 traffickers were convicted. In addition, a total of 1,434 victims were identified and assisted.

The Executive Committee for the Fight against Trafficking, which reports to the Head of the Cabinet of Ministers, coordinates the design and planning of public policy in matters of prevention, prosecution and assistance to victims, among other functions.
