Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States and its principal federal law enforcement agency. It is a member of the United States Department of Justice and reports to both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence. The FBI’s mission is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners. The FBI has jurisdiction over federal crimes and certain other matters, and it works closely with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute criminal cases.
