Child Marriage

Child marriage is a marriage or other union in which one or both of the parties are under the age of 18. Child marriage is a violation of children’s rights, and it can have serious negative consequences for the health, education, and well-being of children. Child marriage is most common in developing countries, and it is often driven by poverty, cultural traditions, and lack of access to education. Child marriage can also be a form of gender-based violence, as girls are disproportionately affected by this practice. The United Nations has set a goal to eliminate child marriage by 2030, and many organizations are working to raise awareness of this issue and to provide support and assistance to children who are at risk of being married against their will.
