Run Away

Run away (runaway) and homeless youth are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking. Several factors contribute to their heightened risk:

  1. Lack of Stability: Runaways often leave home due to unstable or unsafe living conditions, such as abuse, neglect, or family conflicts. This lack of stability can make them more susceptible to traffickers who offer false promises of support and security.
  2. Survival Needs: Homeless and runaway youth may struggle to meet their basic needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. Traffickers exploit these vulnerabilities by offering these necessities in exchange for labor or engaging them in commercial sexual exploitation.
  3. Isolation: Runaway youth are often disconnected from their families and communities, making them easier targets for traffickers who prey on their isolation and offer false companionship.
  4. Mistrust of Authorities: Many runaways have negative experiences with authorities or child protective services, which can lead to a reluctance to seek help from law enforcement or social services when they become victims of trafficking.
  5. Desperation: Some runaways are desperate to escape their circumstances and may engage in risky behaviors, such as survival sex, to meet their immediate needs. Traffickers may exploit this desperation and coerce them into trafficking situations.

Efforts to prevent human trafficking among runaway and homeless youth involve outreach programs, shelters, and support services that provide safe and stable environments, access to education and job training, and emotional support. Raising awareness about the vulnerabilities of this population is also crucial in combatting human trafficking and providing better protection for these vulnerable individuals.

A person with runaway behavior refers to an individual, often a young person, who repeatedly leaves their home or current living situation without obtaining the necessary permissions or following established protocols for leaving. This behavior can manifest for various reasons and is typically characterized by a pattern of leaving and returning without a stable living arrangement.
