International Monetary Fund

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization that provides financial assistance to countries in need of financial support. The IMF was established in 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The IMF works to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange arrangements, and to facilitate the expansion and balanced growth of international trade. The IMF provides financial assistance to countries in the form of loans, which are typically conditional on the recipient country implementing economic and structural reforms. The IMF is funded by member countries and has over 190 member countries. The IMF is often controversial, with critics arguing that its conditions for financial assistance can be too onerous and can impose unnecessary economic burdens on recipient countries.
