January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month: Arkansas’ rank

LITTLE ROCK, AR – January is National Human Trafficking Month. During this month, as with all months, thousands will be sexually trafficked in the United States with Arkansas having some of the highest numbers in the country.

  • Fact: and the need for services increase every day. Little Rock-based Partners Against Trafficking Humans (PATH) received 380 helpline calls in 2022
  • Fact: Approximately 30% of children who are trafficked had a history of running away from
home, according to the 2020 Federal Human Trafficking Report. Those who come from over-protective homes are just as likely as absent parent homes, due to being uninformed and lacking the skills to watch for danger.
  • Fact: Most people reading this have been sexually abused or know someone that has. 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males have been sexually abused.
  • Fact: Traffickers and abusers are typically someone the victim already knows. They watch for the vulnerable, especially those who have already been abused.
  • Fact: The next perpetrator is typically the one a survivor finally confides in about the past abuse.
  • Fact: Although some are kidnapped, most are trapped through a process where they are recruited in a skilled and strategic way.
  • Fact: Violence and drugs are not always a part of trafficking.
  • Fact: Escaping sex trafficking is often an arduous process. Most traffickers give no freedom to their victims and with manipulation and brainwashing victim believe they need to remain. Additionally, for some, it is unsafe for victims to return home because the original abuse happened there.
  • Fact: 80% of rapes on college campuses go unreported due to fear of retaliation and peer
    ridicule.
