International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2022: History

Slavery has existed since Sumerian and Mesopotamian times. In modern times, terrorists from ISIS and Boko Haram have used non-Muslim women as sex slaves. Slavery was prevalent in the empires of Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome, and during the Viking rule of Britain. The transatlantic slave trade of Africans began with the Portuguese and was also practiced by Dutch, English and French traders.

Countless Africans were taken to America to be enslaved in the 17th and 18th centuries, until Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, completely abolished slavery in the United States in 1865.

On December 2, 1949, the General Assembly (UNGA) through resolution 317 (IV) adopted the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of Traffic in Persons and the Prostitutional Exploitation of Others. The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed on 2 December to mark the above convention.
