Multiple victims of alleged human trafficking rescued in Akron – WKYC

Summit County authorities responded to ‘several credible complaints of possible exploitation and potential human trafficking violations' at an Akron tent city.

AKRON, Ohio — The Summit County Sheriff's Office announced that on June 14 multiple victims of alleged human trafficking were found and rescued at a location often referred to as a “tent city” in Akron.

A press release stated that Summit County detectives, in conjunction with the Akron Police Department and the Summit County Prosecutor's Office, responded to “several credible complaints of possible exploitation and potential human trafficking violations” at a location on Kent Place.

Detectives determined that several individuals had been victimized and required immediate intervention.

The victims were offered medical treatment, counseling and shelter service options. According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, one individual was transported to a hospital as a result of their medical condition.

Summit County authorities are investigating the suspected sexual offenses and human trafficking violations.

In addition to the alleged human trafficking, officers identified and subsequently jailed 13 individuals with active felony warrants who resided in or around the Kent Place tent city.

According to the Sheriff's Office, felony charges among those taken to the Summit County Jail include: 

 
  • Burglary
  • Having Weapons While Under Disability
  • Sex Offender Non-Compliance
  • Possession of Drugs
