American Law Enforcement Officer Human Trafficking Training Requirements “State by State”

Police training, certification, and continuing education agencies across America

This is a collection of the various state agencies which oversee police training, certification, and continuing education.

If there are mistakes here, please contact [email protected] immediately. We wish to provide only the most accurate information.

Requirements vary widely by state to state.

Not all 50 states offer training for their officers on human trafficking (those that do, however, have the requirements listed on the sites provided).

Texas, for example, has TCOLE which provides very specific standards that must be met for ANY course pertaining to human trafficking.

Kentucky however offers training on the subject, but doesn’t seem to include a specific set of minimum requirements that must be met for a course to be approved – at least that we could find (and some of these places took a good while to find – the bureaucracy is complicated).

Hawaii, on the other hand, doesn’t offer or require any training whatsoever of its officers on the subject as the state doesn’t even set minimum qualifications to become a police officer.

This also doesn’t take into consideration states that only offer training at specific sites on the subject. For example, West Virginia is a single academy state, and ALL police training – both initial and continuing education – occur at that sole academy; online or distance-learning courses aren’t offered.

We wish to reach out to these various organizations and not only get their states’ minimum requirements for courses (if they have any) but also establish working relationships with them.

We’ll update this list as more information becomes available.
